The King

John Basinger was learning the part of Lear when it occured to him to try it as a one-character play. Jim Stidfole and Leon Callenquin of New London CT’s Hygienic Theaterwerks listened to his pitch, like it and so the concept became a fact. The resulting play, was first seen at the O’Neill Theater Center last year and then again earlier this year at The Oddfellows Playhouse in Middletown, CT. at the invitation of Matt Pugliese. And now, thanks to MJ. it is here at the Vineyard Playhouse for the next step in it development. THE KING presents an old man alone in a blighted landscape. Suddenly, as if compelled, he begins to speak Lear’s wordsand in the vast space around him, all the others in the play, as phantoms, come swirling in upon him. And so the tragedy once again plays itself out.
