Chilmark

In nineteenth-century Chilmark, deafness was not a disability. Some people could hear, others could not. And everyone learned sign language as a matter of course. This is the second production of a compelling drama that premiered at MV Playhouse in 2018 about a remarkable community, based on historical events.

Catherine Rush (Writer & Director)
Catherine is honored to have CHILMARK back at MV Playhouse; a company that has supported and developed her work for over twenty years. She began her journey here in 2003 with a reading of A NICE PLACE TO LIVE, a play commissioned by Wheelock Family Theater, written with Adrian Blue and performed by eleven elementary school children. Over the years the story of the community who signed in Chilmark brought forth two other plays both produced at the Playhouse. Since she was last here in 2018, her play, MAGPIE, was produced as part of the inaugural Studio Series at the Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA) in Washington State. She also wrote two novels during COVID, one of which will never see the light of day. (The jury’s out on the second.) Her new play, FISHBOWL, will be produced in 2026 as part of the BPA Studio Series, and her play, THE LOUDEST MAN ON EARTH, will be read for the New Plays Northwest Festival at The Union Theater in Seattle. You can find more information on her and her work at www.CatherineRush.com

He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering & an M.F.A. in Acting. A tenured hockey referee & coach, Erik has broken up over fifty fights—while starting only one. He currently runs the theatre department at LTCC. Left to his own devices, Erik provokes his children’s wild imaginations, who unanimously agree he is the BEST DAD JOKE GENERATOR ever!!! Erik dedicates this performance and love to his wife, Briann, who enables magic in his life.
