Louis Tyrrell (Director)
Louis Tyrrell has been pioneering theatre in Florida since 1974. Most recently, he has established and serves as Founding Director and Dorothy F. Schmidt Eminent Scholar in the Arts for Theatre Lab, the professional resident company of Florida Atlantic University. Dedicated to the play-making process through the development and production of new work in American theater, Theatre Lab is a laboratory for seasoned theater professionals to share their work with students, faculty, and the entire community. Programs include a Mainstage production series, a year-long play-reading series and new play festival, The Playwrights’ Forum, a master-class forum for America’s finest playwrights, and Future Pages, an innovative education outreach program.
In 1987, Lou founded Florida Stage, a LORT theatre in Palm Beach County. Dedicated exclusively to the development and production of new work in American theatre, Florida Stage was an important nurturing ground for some of the best new plays being written today. Under Lou’s guidance, the company produced more than 150 new works, many of which have enjoyed rich and rewarding production lives throughout the country. Florida Stage closed in 2011, with the completion of it's 24th Season.
