About John Washbrook

Johnny Washbrook starred in the beloved television series, MY FRIEND FLICKA, about a boy and his horse. He went on to a professional acting career for many years. The story of how he "fell" into showbusiness began at 7 years old during the tailend of radio dramas and the beginning era of television. His 35 year career included radio, television, film, and theater in the U.S., Canada, and England.

U.S. TV included WAGON TRAIN, PERRY MASON, MY THREE SONS, HAZEL, LASSIE, DONNA REED SHOW, etc. Canadian and UK television also included recurring roles in multiple TV series. Films included LONELYHEARTS with Montgomery Clift and Robert Ryan, A NIGHTINGALE SANG IN BERKELY SQUARE with David Niven, and THE SPACE CHILDREN with Jackie Coogan and Johnny Crawford. Regional theater productions ranged from Los Angeles (Theater Eleven), to Aspen (Max Theater), Philadelphia (Walnut Street Theater), Tanglewood Theater, Baltimore Theater, Stowe Playhouse, Toronto (Oakville Theater), and New York (off-Broadway) to London (Ellen Terry Theater). Productions ranged from THE MERCHANT OF VENICE (Shylock), THE FANTASTICKS (El Gallo), FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE, RELATIVELY SPEAKING, PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM, CHARLIE BROWN, and DRACULA. John's debut appearance on Martha's Vineyard was in the summer season of 1973 as a member of the Vineyard Players group which performed at the old Oak Bluffs School gymnasium with Jeffrey Kramer and Duncan Ross. The Vineyard productions included A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, MOONCHILDREN, STORY THEATER, and JIMMY SHINE.

Taking a break from showbusiness, John became a banker and moved to the Vineyard to raise his family. He formerly worked at the Edgartown National Bank. Not long after he recently retired, he returned to acting in the Martha's Vineyard Playhouse production of OUR TOWN as the Stage Manager character. This was one of his favorite acting experiences, and especially meaningful since it was his first performance at the Martha's Vineyard Playhouse.

John is a member of SAG-AFTRA, Actors' Equity Association, Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television, and Radio Artists, and British Actors' Equity Association.

He and his wife, Joy, have been together 50 years. Their son, Luke, and his wife and their five year old son live in Dubai.
