About the artist

Born and raised in the Midwest, Norma joined the US Army during the Korean war, serving stateside as an x-ray technician. Taking advantage of the GI bill, she paid her way through art school in New York City.

Working there as a graphic artist, Norma met fellow freelancer Norman Bridwell, also from her home state of Indiana. They married in 1958, working in commercial art as a team. Following the birth of their daughter Emily Elizabeth in 1961, she became a full-time mother, while Norman tried his hand at publishing a first children’s book. Norma suggested he name the larger-than-life character after an imaginary friend from her childhood: Clifford.

In the late 1960’s they moved to Martha’s Vineyard with their two children. Here Norma found her muse in the island’s natural beauty and began painting once again. Splitting their time between their Edgartown home and a small Boston apartment, Norma enrolled in a weekly studio art class at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She would continue this class for over 26 years. At the age of 88, this is Norma’s second solo exhibition.
