Truth Values: One Girl’s Romp Through M.I.T.’s Male Math Maze

"Energetic, intimate, hilarious." – Wired

"De Cari is an appealing performer . . . a kind of wide-eyed Alice-in-Numberland." – The Boston Globe

"Her story is filled with moments of true hilarity, but crosses often and deftly into serious topics of gender inequality, gender bias, and expectations - society's and her own." –

Writer/performer and "recovering mathematician" Gioia De Cari charmingly brings to life more than 30 characters and provides a conversation catalyst about gender equity and diversity issues.
• Should labs be single-sex to spare male scientists the distraction of women crying when criticized, and the temptation to fall in love with them, as Nobel Laureate Tim Hunt proposed?

• Are women inherently inferior to men in math and science, as Lawrence Summers, former President of Harvard, suggested?

• Must women have faith rather than ask for a pay raise, as Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, advised?

• Do women continue to drop out of the STEM fields because they just can’t cut it in highly competitive work environments, as recently put forward by the far-right media?

Come to Truth Values and see for yourself!

Truth Values premiered at the New York International Fringe Festival, where it  won a FringeNYC Overall Excellence Award for Best Solo Show. The play was developed in both the studio of solo show director and acting coach Wynn Handman, and in Matt Hoverman’s (writer of last season’s hit play Who You See Here) Go-Solo Workshop. The play had its regional premiere in a sold-out run at the Central Square Theater in Cambridge, MA and was nominated for an IRNE award. Truth Values has been performed in more than 50 theaters, universities and performing arts centers throughout the United States, including sold-out shows at the La Jolla Playhouse Potiker Theatre, The Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, USC’s Visions and Voices Arts and Humanities Series, The Barclay, The Lied Center, Ensemble Studio Theatre in NYC, San Francisco’s Zeum Theatre and many others.
