PASSIONATA

Directed by MJ Bruder Munafo

Fiona’s aristocratic mother forbids her to marry the man she loves, and Tom, her childhood friend, finds himself in even more desperate romantic straits. Together they craft a scheme to follow their hearts rather than their heads — and thumb their noses at stuffy Edwardian propriety. The world premiere of a hilarious new farce with a fresh, contemporary twist.

Passionata was presented as part of our 2017 Monday Night Special Series under the title, The Green Rose.

ANGELA’S MIXTAPE

by Eisa Davis

Directed by Adrienne D. Williams

Her mother is a lawyer and activist, her aunt is Angela Davis, but who is she? In this spirited autobiographical comedy, Eisa Davis pays affectionate tribute to her unorthodox upbringing. Share her journey as she navigates adolescence, race, family, and her place in the wider world.

AUGUST 18 – SEPTEMBER 8
(Opening night Tuesday, August 21)

World Premiere

CHILMARK

Written and directed by Catherine Rush

Living in contented isolation, everyone in nineteenth-century Chilmark knows someone who is deaf, and every hearing person speaks with their hands as well as their voices. But as the world heads toward the 20th century, a different way of thinking about deafness brings discord between good neighbors and lifelong friends — and ultimately strengthens their fellowship. A compelling drama about a remarkable community, based on historical events.

An earlier play by the same author was presented by the Playhouse in 2007 under the title, This Island Alone.

SEPTEMBER 15 – OCTOBER 6
(Opening night Thursday, September 20)

World Premiere

THE ROOM WHERE I WAS HELD

by David Zax

Directed by MJ Bruder Munafo

Captivity comes in many forms, and sometimes the enemy is closer than you think. Freelance journalist Josh Salazar has just survived a Taliban kidnapping in Afghanistan, and is recovering at home with his doting parents. But when Josh’s girlfriend pays a visit from Kabul, we learn how he found the courage to take on his most dangerous assignment, and at what cost. The world premiere of a gripping drama about the power of money, privilege, and family ties.

The Room Where I Was Held was presented as part of our 2017 Monday Night Special Series.
