TOM SMITH: Stick With It

The unifying theme of STICK WITH IT is, above all else, to expose overlooked, static sticks, leaves and other fundamental, natural ingredients, transforming them into re-energized abstract art.

Tom Smith’s studio is in southeastern Connecticut, where he lives with his family.

Tom Smith

Tom Smith was born in New Jersey in 1959. His mother, Graziella Valenti Smith, was an accomplished painter, and his father, Thomas Gerard Smith, a talented and established architect. At birth, Tom received his first gift from the art world—a painting by abstract expressionist Giorgio Cavallon, one of his father’s friends.
The Smith family had extensive roots in the arts on both his mother and father’s side. As a result, Tom grew up in a house surrounded by works of family friends such as Salvador Dali, Jackson Pollock, Fritz Bultman, and his uncle, minimalist sculptor and painter Tony Smith.
Tom’s unending curiosity started in childhood. He studied under American landscape painter Robert Starkey when he was young, and continued his studies with painter Akira Arita at Rhode Island School of Design. Tom furthered his education at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he studied with William Katavolos and sculptor Haresh Lalvani. At Hampshire College, Tom rounded out his artistic studies with Arthur Hoener and Curt Barnes and, at Mount Holyoke College, with Leonard DeLonga.
Tom went on to the College of Architecture at Virginia Tech, where he studied under Olivio Ferrari and Salahuddin Choudhury. He later studied with Allyn Massey at the Corcoran Gallery’s Corcoran College of Art, in Washington, D.C. Tom’s sculptures and paintings have been shown in various venues — among them, the Slater Memorial Museum, Norwich, Conn.; Eli Whitney Museum, Hamden, Conn.; Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York; and the Hammond Museum, North Salem, NY.
Tom’s studio is in Southeastern Connecticut.
